Your Online Destination for Urban Information
There are a few list out there going around which try to rank the best urban blogs based on Alexa, Technorai, and a few other ill faded factors. So us here at the GreasyGuide.com decided to really see who was on top and who was not. Thanks to Saba Kennedy-Washington who inspired this list.
We also decided that a blogger must own all of their data. Thus any sites built on top of wordpress.com or blogger.com we removed from this list. So check out April’s list of Top Urban bloggers. And if you think your blog is hot and you fully own it ,then hit the comments and let us know and we will consider your blog for ranking in our May edition.

Remember we excluded blogs that are built on top of other networks. The Smoking Section is built ontop of Rawkus.com and to us that data is owned by Rawkus and not the blogger/bloggers themselves. And going with our experience a blog is only worth while if the blogger can fully their content.

one of the problems with using google pagerank is that any blog who has had problems with spam might be excluded.. at one point I had a PR of 3 but then I was inundated with spam and it dropped to like 0. i was told its cause google doesn’t like linkings from spam or something.. anyways i think its back up to like 2 now… still this is good idea! add me to the list next time around
my list:
1. nahright for consistency
2. 2dopeboyz for consistency (watch ur ass nahright, these dudes are hot on ur trail)
3. illdoctrine for some politriks
4. grandgood for that real hiphop
5. thestreetstalk.com of course…

If you are running wordpress you should install the Akismet plugin and that will cut down your site spam. I had the same problem and the spam was so heavy that it would crash my site. But switching over to GoDaddy.com and installing Akismet has solved that problem.

shouldnt it go based on hits, content and overall depth? i mean, i disagreed with the original list b/c i dont think i consider sides like bossip a true hiphop blog - its more gossip than anything. when you think hiphop blog, you think of sites like nahright, 2dopeboyz, therapup, illroots and others - new music, new news, mixtapes, hiphop videos, etc.

Hits? Hits is an extremely web 1.0 measurement and considered extremely invalid in ranking a site.
I’ve worked in the internet space for about 7 years working for BET.com, Time.com, CBSNews.com, and AssociatedContent. So when we do site metrics we consider the following:
Unique visitors - how many time 1 unique person visited your site.
Repeat visitors - how many times a person returned to your site.
Time Spent on Site - How long is a user spending on your site reading content.
These are the top 3 metrics that are considered. If we really want to go deep into it we would need access to ComeScore, HitWise, or Nelison NetRatings to get an extremly accurate view of the urban blogosphere.

Yo I stay at HoodHype.com on their blog. Dudes do a podcast show with fire underground music and their blog is pretty hot. I like em because they put stuff out they are feeling and actuall SPEAK on it rather than just drop shit in a post and leave it.

We used dnScoop.com to calculate this list. The site takes into consideration the estimate value of an url based on traffic, Alexa ranking, inbound links, advertising opps, Google Page Rank, and age of the domain name.

Hey man I’m all for it! I don’t need to slam this even though you slammed our list. The problem is there still is not one set standard to measure how great a blog is or what it’s worth, etc. etc. It’s all subjective including the list we originally put out before you. We never claimed our list was the THE ONE to go by. No it’s just a tool. Just like yours. You are not the internet God. Someone can easily build off your list and say it’s better.
So it’s easy to slam our list but it could just be as easy to slam yours. But I won’t go there. Instead this looks like another good tool to measure the success of urban blogs. We should be about improving and collaborating. Not always just slamming each others work.
Peace fam

I stated that I disagree with the calculations on the list. I didn’t say your list sucked, or it was wack, I stated I disagree and explained why most of it is slightly off.
I never said I was the internet God, however I have more experience then most in this space.

This list is trash. Rawkus bloggers do own their content and RealTalkNY.net get more traffic than everyone on the list except for the top 2.

RealTalkNY:
Well show us some proof. Your site is in the millions on Alexa, has only 86,000 inbound links, and is a .net. And by rules of the internet .net’s are never worth more then dot.com.
As for Rawkus, what are your terms of use with your bloggers? Do they have full 100% ownership for all the content written on the site? Can they go and start their own url and sell their own ads and build their own brand with out using the rawkus platform? Does Rawkus own a display only license for the content and give full rights and ownership to it’s bloggers? Do the Rawkus bloggers get 100% rev. made from the content they are producing?

If you depend on link or site selling as a form of monetization you will definitely want to increase your http://www.alexa.com/data/details/main?url=www.fortunehotels.in Alexa rank, because it will increase your bargaining power when it comes to ad pricing.

Greasy guide, check out The Hip Hop Chronicle. http://www.colonisedminds.wordpress.com
Our inbound links may not be as much as the others but thats because we’ve been up for less than two months.
The last time you may of checked, our alexa rating has increased and is more than the 30th place blog in April’s top urban blogs.

Everyone’s Alexa rating changed as of Thursday. Alexa recently expanded it’s algorithm outside of the just the toolbar panel. I will explain that in full detail when I post the new list.
