Obama’s National Service Bill Could Clear Student Loans

I for one am hoping that this bill passes. I’ve been paying on my student loans forever and it just doesn’t seem like it will ever end. If the National Service Bill is passed then people like me could do community service and get up to $10,000 a year cleared from our student loan debt. Obama is planning a website that will list community service opportunities in your area. The Web site will incorporate existing organizations such as the Corporation for National and Community Services and AmeriCorps. The bill would be “a way for college students to give back and get out of debt. You’ll be able to volunteer and get credit for up to $10,000 worth of loans per year”.

This for me would be a big game changer and would really clear up a lot of money. I would be the first to jump at this type of opportunity and it I think a lot of others would to. And in these hard times when donations are down I’m sure many non-profits could benefit from the extra hands. This would be the greatest thing for me ever!!!

HECK YEAH!!! I've been waiting on this too. Since I do so much outreach and education to under-served audiences anyway, I would love to be able to “work' my student debt off. And since I'm a scientist, I'm really hoping that gets me extra points – since Obama is pro-science/education/technology.

I just hope the bill allows for some other way to work off your debt than teaching K-12 school (which I know I could do now). I'd rather do “science” or informal teaching – like afterschool, summer science camps, mentoring students and teachers, as opposed to classroom teaching.

I want this, too. See you aroung the community service watering hole.

    Please God let this pass..
That Obama team is so common sense driven it is plain genius. Even if it doesnt pass, I pat myself on the back for voting for a team that has the balls to come up with such an idea! This program would even encourage me to get a graduate degree. Times are hard. I would be happy to work cus I sure as hell cant pay.

I am all for it. It would encourage people to help give back more to their communities and country and help people reduce student loan debt.

This would be such a blessing if this bill is passed. I just graduated from college a year ago, thinking I could get a job in my field, because most companies are looking for experience, it is hard for me. And now I am paying for my student loans as we speak. The private loan and also federal stafford loan. I am so much in debt as it is, I would volunteer to do whatever I can to clear up my student loans.

When can I start!!!!!! I have been paying my student loans for over 10 years and the balance looks as if I haven't made a payment. Count me in!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've been working for non-profit for 14 years now. Can I use some of those years? We all know when your working for non-profit your not working for the money. We have actually lost every benefit we had (health, life, eyes and dental, etc.), been cut wages, had to take weeks of with pay. And if that's not enough they're thinking about closing the doors. This is a historical learning center for children serving ages 0-5 and up to 12 during the summer. It was started by Dr. W.E.B. Dubois and Gertrude Ware in 1905. WHERE IS THE LOVE????
