Andy “Wake Self” Martinez has been instrumental in expanding
Albuquerque’s local hip-hop scene for years now. From his project with Zoology
to his recent solo efforts, his concentration on the hip-hop community has been
intense. His time to shine has arrived and it’s no coincidence his
first video off his
new album, Healing Process, is for the track, “Sunshine.”
DJ Young Native, who provided the beats and scratches, makes an
appearance alongside Martinez in this “day-in-the-life” fashioned
video sequence.
Many of Albuquerque’s hip-hop elite such as DJ Shakedown at Ace Barber Shop
and Akword Actwrite of Martinez’s own Skull Control Records make cameo
appearances, which seals up the theme of the video.
Shot and edited by Gabe Baca, the concept was, according to Martinez, “
to promote Albuquerque’s culture and hip-hop with a feel good vibe.” With the
help of the Zia Queenz all female B-Girl Crew, Martinez manages to represent
all elements of hip-hop in a span 2 minutes and 55 seconds, staying true to the
culture. “Sunshine” both enlightens and inspires, proving once again,
music heals
the soul. The video is a precursor of what’s to come from Martinez in the near
future. Stay tuned for Healing Process. Wake Self has arrived. –Kyle Eustice
