Mary Ida Vandross, Mother of Luther Vandross, Passes

From the news wire:

Mary Ida Vandross, mother of the late superstar Luther Vandross, passed away after being in a coma for more than a month.

Mary Vandross, 82, was the last surviving family member in the immediate Vandross family having lost her husband, all four of her children and only grandson to either strokes or diabetes.

up until she took ill, Mrs. Vandross traveled all over sharing her message of love, prevailing faith and the power to end stroke and Diabetes. Luther, died of complications from stroke in 2005 at the age of 54. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the relatives of the Vandross family. We have no doubt that there’s dancing and singing going on at this wonderful family reunion up above.

I am sadden with the lost of Mother Vandross. She was a Mother of all Mothers, especially my Mother since age 18. For 20 years God had given me a wonderful life opportunity when I crossed Mother Vandross path in Augusta, Ga, 1988. Her Motherly love and wisdom wrapped around me and embraced me with the love, support, and discipline a Motherless teen needed inorder to succeed in life. She encouraged me as a teen mother to complete high school and attend college. At times when my heart couldn’t bare no more and I wanted to give up she always embraced me and insured me that this to shall pass and I would be ok. At no times did she refuse her Motherly duties to me. She has been there for me as my rock and voice of inspiration in my times of hardship and success.

To my dearest surviving aunt, sisters and nephews I thank you all for allowing me the opportunity to share Mother Vandross with you all as well as respecting our Mother-daughter relationship. The many late nights and early morning calls to Mother Vandross in my times of need I thank you aunty for waking her up to comfort me. I thank you guys for excepting me in the family when I had no one. May God strengthen you all during your time of bereavement as the gates of Heaven open it’s doors to an Angel of all God’s Motherly Angels. Heaven is rejoicing as she travels to join her heavenly family and reunite with our love ones.

    Sincerely,

    Marjorie

I was very sorry to hear about Miss Vandross passing. After hearing her story about she was the only one left in her immediate family, I use to think to myself, she had to be a very great and strong, strong woman, because I know I couldn’t bare that much pain, especially of my children death.

I would have certainly liked to meet her one day, now I will never get the chance. I can say, she was greatly admired.

To the family my prays and sympathy is with you.

The Vandross family were once member sof our community in the fifties in the Alfread E.Smith houses lower manhattan in fact Luther was in my brothers class we have old school pix of them togather. I had the privleage of meeting Miss Ida at a concert in Philly many years later where Luther performed. It feels good to have some one frrom the old neighborhood meet with such success as Luther did. I understand there was a service inher memory in the mariones Temple church in the old neighborhood.I no longer resiode in N.Y. but I keep up with events in our area. Condolences to extended family members.

This deeply saddens me as I am just finding this out. Mrs. Vandross was a wonderful person and Luther and the rest of his family were blessed to have had her. I remember how gracious she was to all the fans and close celebrity friends of Luther’s during the very difficult time of Luther’s illness. God bless her and may she rest in eternal peace. Heartfelt prayers and best wishes to her family and friends.
